The Department of Homeland Security selected Manhattan for the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) after three years of competitive DHS review of 29 interested sites around the country; a phase-two evaluation of 18 sites in 11 states; and an environmental impact statement process involving six finalist sites . The $650 million project will employ hundreds of scientists and researchers and generate billions in economic impact over the next 20 years. K-State presently has 200 scientists/researchers who work in the area of agri-bioscience, and faculty members generated more than $114 million in outside funding in the 2007 fiscal year.
Manhattan is also part of the "Animal Health Corridor" that extends east into Missouri. Nearly one-third of the $15 billion global market in animal care services and products are produced within the corridor. It includes more than 120 animal health organizations (37 of which are global leaders).
